Article Thumbnail Mystery Shopper: A passionate Nordic walking sales guy inspires purchases
Jun 21, 2007
The girlfriends had gone for their weekly walk together that Sunday morning in Albuquerque, N.M., and were discussing an article in the morning's paper about something new to both of them called Nordic walking. Always looking for something interesting to mix up the workout routine, Jackie and Jane decided to head to Sportz Outdoor for a look-see and to learn more since the store was cited at the end of the story as the place to go for poles specific to the endeavor.

Article Thumbnail Mystery Shopper: Tech spec knowledge leaves shopper uninspired
May 25, 2007
Our SNEWS® operative approached the HealthStyles Exercise Equipment store in Silverthorne, Colo., moseying through the front door of the store in an outlet mall west of Denver. Jack’s mission was to pose as an indoor equipment newbie, with a cover story that he knew he was getting a tad out of shape and needed equipment at home for motivation, but had utterly no idea where to start.

Article Thumbnail Mystery Shopper: Meeting a unique challenge in the quest for fitness
Apr 23, 2007
Traveling down Imperial Highway, Millie saw a large red and yellow sign with "fitness equipment" emblazoned on a small building and knew she had arrived at Body Works in Yorba Linda, Calif. She was definitely in the right place -- now she had to see if the staff could meet her unique and very difficult challenge, one we knew would demand the utmost in education, thought and attention.

Article Thumbnail Mystery Shopper: Travel Country Outdoors gives us reason to smile
Mar 16, 2007
We wondered how retailers are juggling all the clothing choices, and how well they're selling relatively new concepts like soft shells. To find out, we dispatched one of our Mystery Shoppers to search for a skiing/snowboarding jacket in -- where else? -- Florida. Say what? Florida? Hey, in case you hadn't heard, the Sunshine State has one of the biggest ski clubs in the country. And Travel Country Outdoors near Orlando has a reputation for being one of the better outdoor specialty stores in the state.

Article Thumbnail Mystery Shopper: Sucking the "special" out of "specialty"
Mar 5, 2007
You've heard of The Haggler, right? That customer who wants to leg wrestle with you over every last dollar of a sale price until the equipment sale resembles a scene at a used car lot. That's what we had planned, since we know specialty stores experience this, so we could see how the salesperson dealt with it. To our surprise, our Mystery Shopper stumbled onto a shopping experience so bad that he didn't need to haggle to challenge the salesperson. Nope, this shopping experience store needed no help in sucking the "special" right out of "specialty."

Article Thumbnail Mystery Shopper: Ho-hum experience has our runner leaving sans motivation to buy
Feb 5, 2007
SNEWS® heads to the Boston, Mass., area, for yet another in our popular Mystery Shopping series. We encountered a rather ho-hum sales experience at Precision Fitness, which definitely left us wanting more.

Article Thumbnail Mystery Shopper: Just load the treadmill in my truck…now
Jan 2, 2007
A storm of the decade had hit Portland, Ore., downing trees, flooding homes, cancelling flights, and making general havoc of Ted's afternoon attempt to enjoy a run along the Willamette River parkway. Cold, wet, and tired of being buffeted about by the wind and sheeting rain, Ted decided that the next day, after things had settled down a bit weather wise, would be the perfect opportunity to shop for a treadmill.

Article Thumbnail Mystery Shopper: Rutabaga keeps it low key but good
Nov 20, 2006
You can't really miss Rutabaga, especially if you are a paddler in the Madison, Wis., area. Just follow your nose to the water's edge and find the gray building with windows that look like portholes and that backs up to a lagoon. Sort of a big gray whale with windows ready to leap into the water. In fact, right after our SNEWS® operative drove up, a bunch of kids got out of a school bus and pranced their way through the parking lot to hurry down to the fenced-in area behind the building where all the boats and equipment for classes are likely stored. Since it was just about 3:30 p.m., it had to have been an after-school class ready for put in. It was a stream of excitement.

Article Thumbnail Mystery Shopper: Near perfection in sales skills at Fitness Resource
Nov 13, 2006
We ventured down to the Atlanta metro area to a Fitness Resource store for a mystery shopping expedition. And we found a salesperson who had his questioning, listening and answering skills honed to near perfection. And that, as we all know, is the true key to sales success and the hallmark of a superb retail salesperson. We are sometimes amazed how few really do this well; this time, we were amazed how well he did it!
