Tarma Designs Offers ‘Gold' Jewelry without the High Price Tag for the Planet
Recycled Stainless Steel Jewelry Company Brings ‘Faux' Gold Sheen to Green Bling with Eco-Safe Plating Process
PETALUMA, CA (May 12, 2008) – As consumers become increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of the items they purchase, the planet's price tag for even the smallest lifestyle luxuries – including jewelry – comes into question. Always searching for alternative methods for creating accoutrements that are both sustainable and striking, Tarma Designs adds ‘faux' gold pieces to its line of casual, recycled stainless steel jewelry.
Using an eco-friendly vacuum plating process, Tarma adds a beautiful gold finish to its pieces without polluting the environment with toxic byproducts. Whereas gold and silver plating, anodizing and chroming generate a number of hazardous wastes such as cyanide and sulphuric acid, vacuum plating produces only a non-volatile, solid residue from the metals used in the process, which can be easily reprocessed.
“Vacuum plating is a ‘dry' process, whereas anodizing and electroplating are ‘wet,'” explains Sky George, owner of Tarma Designs. “When wet waste byproduct is not disposed of properly, it can seep into the soil and groundwater, causing extremely hazardous effects to humans and other forms of life.”
In addition to being an environmentally responsible process, vacuum plating can produce a colorfast gold hue that is virtually identical to that of authentic gold, and, when used on materials such as stainless steel, there isn't a tendency for tarnishing. Best of all, vacuum plated ‘faux' gold pieces are as attractive as traditional gold jewelry, but much less expensive.
Tarma Designs currently offers two distinct designs in the ‘faux' gold finish: the hand cast Om and the two-tone Om.
The hand cast pieces (pictured), available as an adjustable pendant with Re-Plyâ„¢ recycled polyester cord and hook earrings, feature the spiritual Om icon etched in a delicate, lightweight imperfect circle. MSRP: $20.98 for earrings and $25.98 for pendant.
The two-tone Om offers a central cutout of the universal symbol in ‘faux' gold, surrounded by a contrasting border of petals in the recycled stainless steel's natural hue. MSRP: $25.98
Look for future Tarma Designs pieces in other vacuum plated colors in non-metallic finishes such as greens, blues and reds.
