SportsArt Fitness leads the fitness industry in eco-friendly action. The company developed a new AC servo motor that uses 32% less power than normal AC servo and DC motors.

The new system saves the club owner with 12 treadmills $3000 per year. And that savings would grow as fuel prices climb. “As a club owner, you are always trying to have cost savings … and electricity is a big expense,” says Brant Wacker, owner of Golds Gym in Everett, WA. “Obviously I'd be excited about it.”

SportsArt has a long history of eco-friendly product innovation. As one of the first manufacturers of self-powered elliptical trainers, it was only natural for SportsArt to turn its attention to treadmill power consumption.

Besides helping the environment through product design initiatives, the company has gone lean and green in its daily operations. The use of Styrofoam -- a virtually indestructible waste product -- has been dropped from commercial product packaging. And SportsArt uses 60 to 70% post-consumer paper in its cardboard packaging.

In its Woodinville, WA, operation, SportsArt recycles paper, reuses boxes for part packaging, and is replacing standard bulbs with energy-saving fluorescent lights. “It cuts down on our costs, and it helps the environment,” says warehouse supervisor Vasiliy Mikhno.

Such environmental awareness went into the design of SportsArt production facilities in Taiwan and China. Even the conscientious use of rainwater became part of the building design.

Under buildings at the Tainan, Taiwan, factory, catamaran-style tubes store up to 7500 metric tons of rainwater which is used for watering the grounds. About 100 metric tons of waste water from the production of walk belts also helps keep grass and flowers green.

Waste water from the painting process ends up washing dirt off the street and keeping roadsides green -- after treatment at the factory and a local water processing plant. At the Zhuhai, China, factory, such waste water ends up flushing the toilets.

In 2003, the Tainan factory won second place in a national contest for environmental beautification and building/landscape design. Judges noted the use of open space (green landscaping over 22% of the grounds), the open entryway and simple, clear lines, the use of complementary building materials, and the koi pond as exemplifying the design of a stress-reducing work environment.

Other eco-friendly aspects of the plant include the following:
• An air conditioning system that doesn't turn on until the temperature exceeds 28 degrees Celsius.
• Tinted windows that let sunlight in but keep heat out, reducing the need for electric lights.
• An innovative, sandwich like exterior wall that naturally cools the building.

According to SportsArt marketing director Scott Logan, SportsArt has “gone green” more than any other company in the fitness industry. “We intend to keep charging on in that direction,” Logan says. “Energy savings equals money savings. People want that, and they want to build a more sustainable, healthier future. SportsArt intends to do just that.”
