REI Appoints José Ignacio Lozano to Board of Directors

Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), a national retail cooperative providing quality outdoor gear and clothing, today announced the appointment of José Ignacio Lozano to a one-year term to the company's board of directors.

As an REI member since 1994, Lozano resides in Manhattan Beach, Calif., and is an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoys backpacking, skiing, mountain biking, surfing and sailing. He currently serves as the vice chairman and founding executive vice president of impreMedia, LLC, the leading publisher of Spanish language print and online news media in the country. He is also a private investor who is active in lending his business expertise to a variety of start-up companies.

Prior to his instrumental role in the development of impreMedia, Lozano spent 30 years with his family-owned La Opinión newspaper in various positions, including 18 years as CEO and publisher. Today, as an 80-year old company La Opinión is the largest Spanish language daily newspaper in the country, boasting a readership of 540,000. La Opinión is part of the impreMedia group, which owns or operates 33 titles in the country. He was also an owner of Trestles, Inc., the North American licensee of Rip Curl International, complementing his personal interests in water sports.

In addition to his business leadership and passion for the outdoors, Lozano has an extensive knowledge of community building, especially among Hispanic communities. He currently serves on the board of trustees of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and The Skadden Fellowship Foundation, which supports lawyers who work in the public interest by offering legal services to the poor and working poor, elderly, homeless, disabled and others. Other previous leadership positions include the boards of councilors of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and the School of Public Policy, and as a director of PBS, the Public Broadcasting System, KCET-TV in Los Angeles, Community Television for Southern California, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Constitutional Rights Foundation, the National Law Center for Inter-America Free Trade and the Corporate Advisory Board of the Latin Business Association.
