Outdoor Industries Women's Coalition (OIWC) announces today that Paige Boucher has been chosen as the 2008 recipient of the Pioneering Woman Award, and Angela Hassan has been selected as the recipient of the First Ascent Award. Both awards, specific to the outdoor industry, will be presented during OIWC's Gathering, Friday, January 25 from 6-8pm, during the Outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City, UT.

Pioneering Woman Award
The Pioneering Women Award honors women who have furthered the OIWC mission by demonstrating an outstanding commitment to mentoring female colleagues through exemplary leadership skills.

Paige Boucher, who is a long time member and friend of the industry, has held notable design and marketing positions with leading companies such as The North Face, Sierra Designs, and, most recently, Mountain Hardwear. Today, Boucher manages the publicity department for Mountain Hardwear as their highly respected Public Relations Director.

The Pioneering Woman Award is being given to Boucher for her tireless commitment to mentoring women in the outdoor industry, both collectively and individually with practical and heartfelt advice.

According to the many Boucher supporters, “Paige is, and has always been, inviting new hires and new acquaintances as well as veterans along wherever possible. She is available with encouragement, contacts, insights, and wise counseling, and while one of the most modest heroines of the Outdoor Industry, she is always there to champion others and assist in gathering the confidence, not shy away from a challenge.”

First Ascent Award
Outdoor Industries Women's Coalition created the perfect complement to the Pioneering Woman Award with its First Ascent Award. This award recognizes a woman new to the industry who demonstrates strong potential for leadership. The award furthers the vision of OIWC by increasing visibility of talented young women at lower levels in an organization, thereby facilitating their development on their journey to future leadership. The 2008 First Ascent Award winner for the outdoor industry is Angela Hassan of Backcountry.com.

Angie made her way into the outdoor industry by working first as an Executive Assistant at Marker Ltd for the Salt Lake Olympics, then moving from an Office Manager to a Rep with a local sales firm. Now at Backcountry.com as the Youth Merchandise Division Manager, Angie is responsible for managing and developing the product lines and brand representation in the youth division.

In her nomination, Angie is praised as “a true leader who isn't afraid to make a big change in an effort to improve herself…Angie has a great confidence with humility about her. She is always willing to learn and improve.”

In accepting the award, Angie says, “This industry is my passion, and I look forward to continuing to grow and learn in my current role. It's exciting to be honored for doing something that I truly love to do.” She added, “I had a wonderful mentor who helped me find my path, and I hope to do the same for somebody else someday. In the meantime, I strive to be a person my 4-year-old daughter can look up to.”

As the winner of the First Ascent Award, Angie receives $1,000 scholarship to be applied towards a leadership development training or seminar of her choice.

Awards Presentation
Paige Boucher and Angela Hassan will receive their Pioneering Woman and First Ascent Awards during the annual winter OIWC Gathering on January 25th. The event, held at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City, UT, from 6 – 8pm, will include great food, drinks, networking opportunities, and a silent auction with outdoor gear donated by OIWC's sponsors. The awards presentation will begin at 7pm.
