Rock/Creek today announces the release of the video from the 2010 StumpJump 50k & 11 mile trail running race. This latest video features interviews from the Appalachian Trail women’s speed record holder, Jenn Pharr Davis, as well as 2009 StumpJump course champion, Josh Wheeler. Filmmaker Andrew Kornylak captures the uniqueness of this national event and the beauty of the trails that surround Chattanooga. The video is available now online at Rock/Creek’s youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/rockcreeker
Over 600 participants from across the United States joined to experience what Trail Runner Magazine calls, "the East's legendary meat-grinder." Nearly 900 people- racers, spectators and volunteers alike- came to the city for Friday’s Rock/Creek Vendor Fair and Saturday’s race on Signal Mountain, TN. The weekend’s events kicked off the inaugural 10-day RiverRocks festival in Downtown Chattanooga. All proceeds raised go to support the new 501(c)(3) non-profit, Wild Trails, for the use, expansion and protection of trails in greater Chattanooga.
In a brief interview with filmmaker Andrew Kornylak, he shares what it’s like working in the woods on a race like this: “Rock/Creek's StumpJump is just a great race to cover. There are unique sections of trail with geological formations like the Rock House, Mushroom Rock, and the Rock Garden. The Rock Garden area in particular might just be one of my favorite spots anywhere.”
When asked what he has learned from shooting in the woods and covering such a popular event as this event, Kornylak and assistant Gareth Nichols shared the elements contributing to their success: “This was my eighth trail race covered for Rock/Creek and Wild Trails and I can say the key to a successful shoot is great logistical support. This is where Mark McKnight, Rock/Creek Marketing Director, and the race staff come in. Mark has been on the ground with us for every race, and has run many of these trails himself. Also, as a photographer, Mark is on the same visual wavelength, so we find the good spots to shoot at the right time, all the while coordinating with Race Director Jonathan Mobley about where and when the leaders might be at any time. We also check in with the support crews and volunteers to get the inside information on whatever story we are following, which can totally change over the course of the day.”
As Nichols adds, “it is essential to plan ahead so you can pack as little gear as possible. Speed is of the essence when shooting a race like we did, and the added weight of gear that you may never use could slow everyone down and potentially keep you from getting to the right place at the right time.”
Andrew talks about the gear he selected for the race: “I shot this latest Trail Series video on a Panasonic HPX370 P2HD camera. Gareth Nichols ran sound with a boomed Rode shotgun mic, a Lectrosonics wireless Lavaliere mic, and reliable camera mics for the interviews and shot additional footage and timelapse from a Panasonic HPX170. I most often shoot with the Panasonics because they are lightweight and compact enough to run around the woods covering race action, while being very high-quality and feature-rich professional cameras. The 370 looks beastly as a shoulder-mounted camera, but the ergonomics are great, especially with the lighter Anton Bauer lithium batteries.”
The race was part of the Rock/Creek Trail Series; proceeds benefit Wild Trails, and sponsors include: Patagonia, Salomon, The North Face, Marmot, SmartWool, Outdoor Research, Deuter Packs, Vasque, Hammer Nutrition, Toyota of Cleveland and Capital Toyota, Columbia, La Sportiva, Skullcandy, Greenlife Grocery, Nikwax Waterproofing, Southern Spring Water, Smith Optics, CamelBak, Chaco, KEEN, Merrell, Archer Physical Therapy, RiverRocks Chattanooga, Blue Smoke Coffee, Trail Runner Magazine, and North Shore Yoga.
