Mammut Eiger Extreme Collection and Ride R.A.S. Avy Pack Nab Gear-Of-Year Awards
Shelburne, VT (October10th, 2011) – Mammut, the Swiss quality provider of alpine gear and apparel, has been recognized by National Geographic Adventure with Gear-of-the-Year designation, for the Felsturm Half-Zip Jacket and Ride R.A.S. avalanche airbag. Also touted on the pages of the Skiing Magazine 2011 Gear Guide, the hard-shell category winning Felsturm was joined by its line-mate, the Polartec® NeoShell constructed Gipfelgrat Jacket.
Available to the retail public this fall, the Eiger Extreme collection showcases the best in Mammut quality and function, with new fabrics like NeoShell and Gore-Tex® Active Shell, and new designs for everything from hood closures and sleeve tailoring, to a proprietary zipper technology that eliminates excessive grams. After debuting the collection at Winter Outdoor Retailer in January 2011, the Eiger Extreme Collection has attracted an enormous amount of awards, press and attention.
“This is a huge vote of confidence ,â€said Bill Supple, CEO of Mammut USA. “We put so much into the technical development of the Eiger collection by using the best materials our suppliers could muster. It feels great to have teams of testers and media recognize that it is as functionally attractive as it is aesthetically.â€
The Gipfelgrat Jacket was also picked in the Skiing Gear Guide for its technical alpine design, and drew praise as an extremely breathable, fully seam taped waterproof softshell. Polartec's NeoShell fabric created a fair amount of buzz over the past season leading up to the Eiger Extreme collection launch, and as this release was being prepared , Mammut was notified that the Gipfelgrat Jacket was also selected in the upcoming Outside Magazine Buyer's Guide for Fall/Winter 2011.
The hard goods side of the Mammut family has also been running wide-open. Since their July 2011 purchase of Snowpulse, Mammut has attracted even more attention with their Ride R.A.S. (removable airbag system) as this life-saving technology becomes more and more affordable and reliable. In 2011-12, the Mammut line will include 2 models of the R.A.S. device, built on the platform of the very successful Ride winter pack that is available in 22 or 30 litre sizes. Incorporating a 150 litre balloon, the R.A.S., inflates to give added buoyancy to the wearer in hopes of floating them on top of a debris field. Research has shown these devices to be highly successful and essential in trying to survive an avalanche. “ By 2013, we plan to have our entire Snow pack line of 7 models R.A.S. compatible ,which means you will be able to swap the balloon and air supply bottle from your 45 litre mountaineering pack to your 16 litre slackcountry pack,†Supple commented. “This device along with our Pulse Barryvox or new ELEMENT Barryvox beacon are the finest tools available to protect a skier, rider, or snowmobiler in avalanche terrain.â€
Mammut's commitment to Avy Safety runs as deep as their 150 year heritage, and the company has tapped Doug Workman to support and provide service to professional users, including patrollers and guides as Mammut's US Snow Safety Advisor..Workman has been a professional mountain and ski guide for over a decade. Highlights of his professional career include guided ski descents of the Grand Teton and Denali, ski guiding on the Antarctic Peninsula, and nearly ten years heli-ski guiding in Alaska where he manages Valdez Heli-Ski Guides. He is also a professional patroller at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and a heli ski guide in Jackson Hole for High Mountain Heli-Skiing.
Supple went on to add, “The success we have been enjoying is great. We are always excited by awards, but what really drives us is to create gear and clothing that makes climbing, skiing and mountaineering safer and more fun for everyone getting out into the mountains.â€
The Eiger Extreme Collection, Ride R.A.S. Airbag and new ELEMENT Barryvox beacon will be available this October at select Mammut Dealers and online partners. More information can be found at www.mammut.ch .
