Located in southwest Colorado, Ouray has plenty of ice terrain where hundreds of the world's most accomplished ice climbers as well as recreational climbers will congregate January 6-9, 2011 for the annual Ouray Ice Festival. Amid the festival-like atmosphere will be the LOWA boot tent, stocked with demo product for ice climbers to check out. Participants will also be able to take advantage of clinics hosted by members of LOWA's international climbing team, including ice-climbing legend, Freddy Grossniklaus. The Ouray organizers will be giving away prizes that include gift certificates towards LOWA boots.
LOWA invites festival participants to demo their world-class, German mountaineering boots including the Mountain Expert GTX, Ice Comp IP GTX, Vertical GTX and Silberhorn GTX models. The boot tent team will be led by Rolf Eberhard who recently returned from summiting Mt Everest and who knows a thing or two about how climbing boots should fit. Participants can then join Freddy, Markus Beck and Chad Peel for a series of clinics and maybe hands-on instruction. All three are professional guides that climb and teach in LOWA's.
In addition, and on a much more serious note, join Colorado climber and LOWA ambassador, Jim Davidson as he shares the compelling tale of how he and his partner, Mike Price, summited Mount Rainer and then during the descent, a hidden snow bridge collapsed, dropping them 80 feet into a glacial crevasse and burying them under snow. Jim was the only survivor. Trapped alone in icy darkness, Jim faced a harrowing solo survival climb up overhanging ice. Sunday January 9 from 9:00-10:30AM. American Alpine Club. Ouray Brewery.
