Klean Kanteen CEO Jim Osgood has joined 1% for the Planet, the global environmental organization, as the nonprofit’s newest board member. Klean Kanteen joined 1% for the Planet in 2008, and Jim’s addition is integral to an 18-month overhaul of leadership that includes a new board chairman and five new board members.
“At Klean, we’re committed to environmental and social responsibility in everything we do. 1% for the Planet unites businesses around the world to support a common goal of giving back through every day actions,” said Osgood. “It’s important for us to show that being responsible and purpose-driven in our actions is just the right thing to do. I’m thrilled to dive into business strategy and global operations with the 1% team.”
Serving as CEO and President of the family-owned company since June 2011, Osgood previously managed Slickrock Concepts, a product strategy and development firm in Colorado. He has also served in executive positions with a range of global companies, including The Coleman Company and Baxa Corporation, garnering 25 years of experience in strategy, operations and product development. Osgood has long been active in supporting environmental issues through the promotion of responsible business practices, helping youth outdoor stewardship programs, and advocating for awareness and policy changes on behalf of Klean’s many non-profit partners.
Since joining 1% for the Planet in 2008, Klean Kanteen has donated over $1.5 million to environmental non-profits and is on pace to hit the $2 million mark by the end of 2017. In particular, Klean is focused on advocating for clean water – swimmable, fishable and drinkable – as a basic human right. Partnering with American Rivers, 5 Gyres and Surfrider, Klean is on a mission to inspire behavior changes that reduce plastic waste in oceans and waterways . In 2012, Klean Kanteen proudly became a benefit corporation and is committed to meeting rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.
In addition to Osgood, recent new additions to the 1% for the Planet board include Brant Barton, new Board Chairman, Hilary Dessouky, General Cousel of Patagonia, Marc Randolph, co-founder of Netflix, Kristine Stratton, Senior Vice President of Operations at Earthjustice, and T.J. Whalen, the new Board Treasurer and Managing Director for FreshTracks Capital.
The new leadership at 1% for the Planet has created a compelling strategic vision, re-focused brand voice, and the addition of Individual Membership. The successful launch of Individual Membership in March 2017 has, to date, yielded more than 130 people who have committed to giving 1% of their annual salary or net worth to environmental solutions. The organization’s goal is to have 1,000 individual members join the global movement by year’s end.

About 1% for the Planet
1% for the Planet is a global organization that connects dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving. We recognize that the current level of environmental giving—only 3% of total philanthropy—is not enough to solve the most pressing issues facing our planet. Through our business and individual membership, 1% for the Planet inspires people to support environmental organizations through everyday actions and annual commitments. We advise on giving strategies, we certify donations, and we amplify the impact of the network.
