Woodstock, CT – Elizabeth Simon, sales engineer with Rogers Corporation High Performance Foams, manufacturer of PORON® Performance Cushioning materials, was recently elected by Choose Outdoors governing committee as Board vice chair.

Choose Outdoors promotes outdoor recreation and active lifestyles through support for public lands and waters. It was founded by Bruce Ward and Craig Mackey in 2009 with support from Outdoor Industry Association, National Ski Areas Association, National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds, and America Outdoors Association. The US Forest Service is a key partner of the organization.

“Elizabeth is the consummate professional who is all about getting things done,” said Ward, founder and senior advisor of Choose Outdoors. “She is intimately knowledgeable about a broad spectrum of outdoor interests and shares Choose Outdoors ecumenical view about outdoor recreation.”

“Choose Outdoors advocates many outdoor-related issues that are near and dear to me,” said Simon who lives in Seattle, WA. “For instance, it encourages recreational users of the outdoors such as hikers, hunters, skiers and snowmobilers to share the public lands and work collectively to protect them. Additionally, it develops programs that encourage kids to care about the planet and get outdoors with the hopes of curbing obesity and violence caused by boredom.”

Choose Outdoors initiatives in 2009 and 2010 included:
• Providing recommendations and best practices in response to President Obama's America's Great Outdoors Initiative.
• Developing a model for creating recreation-oriented collaboratives across the country.
• Working with five USDA Forest Services Regions to help develop a strategic framework for recreation.
• Creating a pilot program for inner-city youth with support from the Mayor of Denver's Safe City office, The North Face, Rotary International Clubs, SOS Outreach, CityWild, Big City Mountaineers and Wonderful Outdoor World.
• Developing a unique partnership with Recareas.com to provide grants to outdoor recreation oriented nonprofits.
• Creating the Senate Outdoor Recreation Caucus.
• Developing a communications plan to increase awareness of the devastation caused by the bark beetle in the Rocky Mountain region including establishing various public/private partnerships.
