Black Diamond Equipment Ltd., a global leader in climbing, skiing and backcountry gear, will host the 4th Annual Wasatch PowderKeg on Saturday, March 18, 2006. A ski mountaineering race, the PowderKeg accesses out-of-bounds terrain from Alta, a ski area in Little Cottonwood Canyon, and culminates at Big Cottonwood Canyon's Brighton ski resort after traversing the heart of the Wasatch Mountains.

“Ski mountaineering races are increasing in popularity,” commented Colleen Graham Nipkow, Black Diamond's PowderKeg Organizer. “Registration numbers continue to grow every year, and skiers are traveling from farther away to take part in the PowderKeg. It is a wonderful event for both the local and national backcountry skiing communities.”

The Black Diamond Wasatch PowderKeg is presented by Patagonia along with AirMed, Alta, Brighton, Solitude, Ernst & Young, SCARPA, Ski Utah and the Utah Travel Council, Backcountry and Couloir magazines, Uinta Brewing, Sports Guide and Thorlosâ„¢. The race features two categories: Recreational and Racing. The Recreational Division covers 5.77 miles, with 3,550 feet of ascent and 3,352 feet of descent, and the Racing Division covers 8.39 miles, with 5,413 feet of ascent and 5,102 feet of descent. Entrance fees are $55 for each division, and registration is open through March 12, 2006. Late registration, accepted through March 15, jumps to $75 per competitor.
