SALT LAKE CITY - April 6, 2010 - Bikes for Kids Utah, a non-profit 501(C)3 organization, will give 1,000 new bicycles to pre-qualified, underprivileged second-grade students at its fifth annual giveaway event on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

During the giveaway event, where the recipients will learn about bike safety and nutrition, Bikes for Kids Utah will host a series of fundraiser bicycle rides to help generate the financial support needed to purchase the bikes.

The pre-qualified children receiving bikes were selected from Boys & Girls Clubs, including Salt Lake, South Valley and Weber Counties, and elementary schools, including Bennion, Heartland, Lincoln, Majestic, Moss, Plymouth, Sandy, Riley, McMillan, Liberty, Grant, Guadalupe and Washington. The recipients will also receive helmets, bike locks and t-shirt.

"When you give children bikes, something inside of them lights up," said Debbie Reid, Bikes for Kids Utah founder and president. "The giveaway is a huge day for these young people; they become bike owners and their world opens up to the joy and freedom of cycling. For the past five years, community members with a range of cycling abilities have turned out to experience this youthful excitement and ride for a good cause. We're eager to see enthusiasm for our cause grow this year and beyond."

Bike Presentation
The bicycles will be given away at the Intermountain Medical Center parking lot (5121 South Cottonwood Street in Murray, Utah) starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, with Bikes for Kids Utah staff and volunteers delivering bikes to a new group of kids every half hour. This year the children will receive Bikes for Kids Utah branded bikes that will help make the community more aware of the Bikes for Kids Utah cause.

Following the bike giveaway, the children will receive bicycle helmets and locks before attending presentations about healthy nutrition by Committed Health and Fitness and helmet safety by the Brain Injury Association of Utah, then participate in a Bike Safety Rodeo.

During these presentations, children and parents alike will learn about the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices and of making bike riding as safe as it is fun. As part of its presentation, the Brain Injury Association of Utah will teach the children the appropriate and safe way to wear a bicycle helmet. The Bike Safety Rodeo will further teach children how to signal, where to ride and how to maneuver their bikes.

After participating in the educational presentations, the children will be given unassembled boxed bikes, after which they can either take them home to assemble, or build them onsite with the help of Revolution Bicycles and several Boy Scouts working towards their Eagle Scout merit badges.

In addition, the children will receive a shirt specifically designed t-shirt by 2010 Bikes for Kids T-Shirt Design Contest winner along with other items donated by Bikes for Kids Utah sponsors.

There will also be entertainment for the children and their families throughout the day.

Several fundraising rides will be held concurrently with the giveaway to generate needed support for Bikes for Kids Utah. The rides will begin at 8 a.m. at Intermountain Medical Center, 5121 South Cottonwood St. in Murray, and end at their starting point.
