EYENNE, WY – OutdoorGearLab.com announced today the results of its 2013 Editors’ Choice awards for women’s down jackets. Eleven of the best jackets were compared in extensive side-by side testing. The testing involved may months of camping, hiking and backpacking around the Eastern Sierra, Moab, and the Pacific Coast. View the complete reviews at women’s down jackets.
MontBell Frost Smoke – Winner of the Editors’ Choice award for 2013. According to Gear Editor McKenzie Long, "Ultimately we felt that the Frost Smoke edged ahead of the others. As the lightest of the lightweight jackets, even including the hood, and the least expensive, it is the best deal while at the same time being the highest performer. We feel that the reinforced patches add durability, we love the cozy fleece-lined hand pockets, and we even like the look of this jacket. It even has adjustable Velcro cuffs, making it easier to secure the sleeves around gloves.”
MontBell Alpine Light Down Parka – Winner of the Best Buy award for 2013. This award is given to a product that balances a high score in our tests and a reasonable price. According to Long, “The MontBell Alpine Light is a great deal for the price you pay. It is one of the less expensive of the light alpine down jackets and has other nice features like particularly large hand pockets with a soft fleece lining, and a wind resistant outer fabric that is a bit more durable that the fabric used in the Nitrous and Down Sweater. It stuffs into a separate stuff sack rather than a pocket on the jacket. This jacket, like the other lightweight technical jackets we reviewed has 800 fill down and is lightweight. "
Mountain Hardwear Hooded Ghost Whisperer – Winner of a Top Pick award for 2013. This award goes to a product that is the best at a specific application. In this case, the Ghost Whisperer was our favorite lightweight down jacket. According to Gear Editor Long, "With an incredible warmth-to-weight ratio, the Ghost Whisperer stands out for being light and airy, easy to pack, and a cozy insulating layer. It is the lightest jacket we evaluated, yet it still has all the most useful features of slightly heavier down jacket: a hood, 2 hand pockets, a cinchable hem, and the ability to stow in its own pocket."
