Sierra Magazine Nominated for Three Maggie Awards

San Francisco, CA – SIERRA, the national magazine of the Sierra Club, has been nominated as a finalist this year in three categories by the Western Publications Association's Maggie Awards. The WPA has often recognized SIERRA for excellence in publishing as demonstrated by 20-plus Maggies awarded over the years. Most recently SIERRA received two Maggies in 2007 for fine color and black/white photography. This year SIERRA is nominated in the following categories:

Best Series of Articles/Consumer:
Smart Energy Solutions
January/February, May/June and July/August

Best Regularly Featured Department, Section or Column/Consumer:
Ways & Means
March/April, May/June and September/October

Best Single Editorial Illustration/Consumer:
A Patriotic Pall
September/October

Bob Sipchen, Editor-in-chief, sees the nominations as confirmation that SIERRA is delivering important and timely material in a compelling way to a highly-educated and influential audience. “In particular, the series on smart energy solutions brought our 1.2+ million readers the in-depth examination of Sierra Club priorities that they expect from SIERRA—priorities that are now shared by mainstream America.”

“In every issue of SIERRA, Ways and Means, the column written by Carl Pope, Sierra Club's Executive director, serves to alert Club members to the sustainability challenges we face and points the way to solutions,” said Sipchen. “It's one of the most popular departments with our readers. SIERRA's editorial and art/design staff working collaboratively well deserve the credit for this year's nominations.”

Since 1951, the WPA has honored publishers located west of the Mississippi for outstanding achievement and editorial and design excellence with the prestigious Maggie Awards. The Western Publications Association will hold its 57thAnnual Maggie Awards Banquet Friday evening, May 2nd, in the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Hotel at Los Angeles Airport, 5400 West Century Blvd., Los Angeles, California.
