Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), a national retail cooperative providing quality outdoor gear and clothing, today announced plans to open a new store in the Summerlin neighborhood of Las Vegas, Nev. at Boca Park this fall.
Located at the intersection of West Charleston and South Rampart Boulevards, the 28,000 square-foot, one-story location will offer the top brands of gear and apparel for outdoor recreation, including the co-op's award-winning REI and Novara products. The store will also feature a bike shop where technicians will provide quick assemblies or repairs, a gear rental department to encourage members and customers to explore new outdoor activities, and a community space for non-profit partners and employees to use for classes, presentations and events.
“With our current customer base and the overall growth in the Las Vegas community, it is only natural for us to increase our presence in this area. The Summerlin neighborhood is a natural choice due to its proximity to recreational opportunities and its high population of outdoor enthusiasts,†said Doug Schmidt, REI retail director for the Southwest district. “Whether people are interested in climbing at Red Rock, outfitting their children with their first bike or learning a new activity, we're excited to be a resource to help connect others to more adventures in the outdoors.â€
Committed to promoting environmental stewardship and increasing access to outdoor recreation in the communities where it operates, REI partners with many non-profit conservation and outdoor organizations through education, volunteerism, gear donations and financial contributions. In 2007, the co-op provided $20,000 of support to four nonprofit partners in the Las Vegas area, including the Friends of Nevada Wilderness, Friends of Red Rock Canyon, Camp Cartwheel (Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation) and Southern Nevada Regional Trails Partnership. In addition, the co-op helped organize eight conservation and restoration projects in the area with nearly 400 volunteers, who gave 1,745 hours of service in the past year.
REI has been outfitting co-op members and customers in Nevada since 1999, when the company opened its first location in Reno. Summerlin joins another store in Henderson, Nev. in serving more than 14,000 active members within the Las Vegas area specifically.
Hiring clinics will occur approximately two months prior to the store's opening and the co-op will recruit approximately 60 employees for the new store. More information about employment opportunities is available at www.rei.com/jobs.
While anyone may shop at REI, members pay a one-time $20 fee and receive a share in the company's profits through an annual member refund based on their purchases. Based on the co-op's 2007 sales, $62.8 million was distributed to its active members through the annual patronage dividend earlier this year.
