Black Diamond Equipment®, a global innovator in climbing, skiing and technical mountain sports equipment, introduces a collection of product that reflects 25 years of insight and innovation and unveils a new brand mantra that succinctly expresses the company ethos: Use. Design. Engineer. Build. Repeat. Black Diamond’s Spring ‘14 Collection, to be showcased at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, honors the company’s roots and core values and proves that it remains dedicated to pushing limits and challenging conventions.
“Our Spring 2014 collection reaffirms our commitment to innovation in climbing and related mountain sports,” explains Ryan Gellert, Brand President of Black Diamond Equipment. “Our intimacy with these sports is reflected in the clean, functional design of the products that we create. Spring 2014 captures that as well as any season to date.”
In its second season, the Black Diamond apparel line nearly doubles in size with a focus on summer alpinism and modern cragwear. “We’ve taken this season to do two things: add a small collection of technical alpine products for our core customer and reflect the ever evolving culture of rock climbing in silhouettes that simply give the BD guy a new wardrobe,” states Tim Bantle, Black Diamond Equipment’s Director of Apparel.
Dawn Patrol™, Black Diamond’s pinnacle alpinism collection, returns for Spring ’14 styles featuring Schoeller® stretch-woven fabrics with Nanosphere® Technology. Also in partnership with Schoeller, this season marks the reincarnation of the B.D.V.™, the Black Diamond Vertical. The original B.D.V. was born in 1998 when a cult following spurred Black Diamond to develop a select offering of focused and popular climbing pieces. The spirit and functionality of Black Diamond Vertical returns next spring with B.D.V., an alpine softshell collection.
The core Schoeller textile used in the B.D.V. series is also re-deployed in a somewhat unexpected experiment called the Modernist Rock collection: a super clean and sophisticated riff on modern climbing jeans and shorts, topped off with a stealthy and premium long-sleeve woven shirt.
In hardgoods, the carabiner line showcases the Magnetron VaporLock for Spring ‘14. Weighing in at only two ounces, the Magnetron VaporLock will be Black Diamond’s lightest locking carabiner incorporating Magnetron technology, in which two independent magnetic arms in the gate and a steel insert in the nose lock the carabiner. Additionally, Black Diamond’s trad and sport climbing harnesses – the Chaos, Ozone and women’s-specific Aura – will all be updated with ultra-durable fabrics and lighter-weight designs for improved performance. The new Camalot X4 Offset is a versatile 4-lobe, flexible-stem camming unit that features a narrow head-width and integrated cam springs, improving the expansion range of the gold-standard Camalot family.
“There’s a sense of responsibility when it comes to our impact on the places we climb,” comments Bill Belcourt, Climbing Category Director at Black Diamond Equipment. “The more a crack gets climbed, the more placements become irregular, even in granite, meaning offset cams, which were once considered niche, are now much more mainstream and in greater demand. Plus, a cam that fits better should in theory cause less wear and tear on the crack.”
In packs, specific for North America, Black Diamond will introduce the new Element and women’s specific Elixir. Both feature streamlined, lightweight top-load designs with active suspension systems for the weight-conscious weekend backpacker. In lighting, Black Diamond will introduce complete redesigns of its flagship models: the Storm and the Spot. Both will become significantly brighter and feature the all-new, innovative PowerTap™ Technology, which allows for quick, on-the-fly brightness adjustment with just a finger tap to the side of its touch-sensitive housing. Lastly, Black Diamond’s trekking pole line will include 10 new styles with a host of updates to both the Approach and Mountain series trekking pole lines.
“I never cease to be inspired by the steady stream of meaningful, next generation, innovation that our designers and engineers manage to bring forth season after season,” states Peter Metcalf, President of Black Diamond, Inc. “Now we have a smart, innovative, and highly functional line of BD crag apparel to compliment the game changing gear. The symmetry between the two is both beautiful and compelling.”
Black Diamond Equipment’s Spring 2014 collection will be on display at booth #7013 at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City, Utah, from July 31-August 3.
