Keeping it all in the family, son of Cascade Designs founder takes the helm.
Years after packing Therma-a-Rest stuff sacks in his room as a child, David Burroughs, 53, son of Cascade Designs founder John Burroughs, has been named the brand’s latest president.
He takes over for Joe McSwiney, who has served as president since 2006. McSwiney, a longtime Cascade employee is stepping aside to allow the family tradition to continue but will remain on the board.
"The great thing about this family businesses is the connection to 40+ years of history, people, and values," Burroughs said. "There’s a unique ethos and culture at Cascade particularly around manufacturing that I believe benefits from family continuity."
On top of unofficial childhood roles following the company’s startup, Burroughs has spent 12 years with the company, most recently as their Vice President of Strategic Business Development, as well as a member of the Board of Directors since 2004.
Cascade Designs, a Seattle-based family-run company since 1972, broke into the outdoor industry with the creation of the Therm-a-Rest.
"My feelings are a mix of gratitude, honor, pride, and sense of responsibly to our customers and employees," Burroughs noted, adding that he's also excited for progress within the brand that includes next-generation Therm-a-Rest manufacturing equipment, a new distribution and manufacturing platform in Reno, and upgraded information systems.
