Go ahead, leave it out in the rain. Mountain Hardwear's OutDry Duffel will keep your stuff bone dry.

Mountain Hardwear's OutDry duffel will keep your clothes dry even if you drop it in a puddle and leave it out in the rain.

Mountain Hardwear's new OutDry duffel line represents a new use for parent company Columbia's waterproof/breathable fabric construction. Up until now we’ve seen OutDry construction in gloves and packs (Mountain Hardwear) and in outerwear (Columbia), but a lightweight waterproof/breathable duffel is a rare commodity.

At 1 lb. 13 oz. (for the 75L size) the bag is superlight yet strong: The OutDry membrane is laminated to the inner surface of a 21-denier nylon. The spacious, uncluttered interior compartment is totally waterproof. It’s been rain room tested for 24 hours straight, so go ahead and set it down in a puddle or leave it outside your tent's vestibule in a rainstorm--your stuff will remain dry.

The bag has clean, simple lines without a lot of excess stitching, padding or zippers and the seams it does have are protected with a beefy tape. There’s a simple sling style shoulder strap and loops at the ends that let you haul it with a partner or strap it to a roof rack or a yak's back. The minimalist design is a nice contrast to so many other duffels which are overbuilt and heavy, sucking up several pounds of your allotted airline baggage weight before you even start loading in the gear.

And here’s the coolest part: because the bag is totally watertight, it also doubles as a lightweight, packable cooler. When you get to your destination just empty it out, load it up with ice and beer, and let the good times roll.
