SNEWS Qs: Katie Kozloff Banks, Katie K Activewear

Katie Kazloff Banks has a new line of clothing for plus-size women, in addition to Taffy, that she's launching and hoping retailers will see the value in carrying it. Her new line is called Katie K, named, of course, after her.

Katie K

Wyomissing, Pa.

Tell us about the history of your company?

I founded my company in 2009. We specialize in women's apparel. We are introducing a brand new line this year at the winter Outdoor Retailer called Katie K! Katie K combines style and function to create top of the line activewear for women with curves. All items merge technology and performance with fashion and elegance. Katie K is a line of activewear designed exclusively for curvy women. Named after our founder who loves all things active and believes you shouldn’t have to compromise style for comfort or performance. All women, regardless of size, should have activewear options that fit and flatter their body. Whether hitting the gym or running errands, Katie K offers stylish and attractive choices to keep you looking great! Katie K combines fashion and function effortlessly in order for you to get as much enjoyment from your outfit and life as possible.

Tell us about your brands and products:

We have three apparel lines, Lolly, Taffy and Katie K. Lolly is novelty underwear with a cheeky sense of humor. Taffy is stylish and attractive activewear for women with curves. Katie K is our performance activewear line for plus size women.

What were you, as the founder of the company, doing before this?

I was a personal trainer at a gym in Philadelphia.

How has the reality of starting your business differed from the dream of it?

I always knew it would be hard work and very time consuming. I think what changes the most for me are my benchmark goals. Each goal gets higher and always seems impossible to reach. I definitely appreciate every time I hit one of my goals and think how I've come so far, but then there's always a part that thinks, I'm only here? So there's always a mix of looking at the accomplishments and being proud of those and always pushing forward to the next goal.

Where did your inspiration come from?

I realized a big connection between feeling good about myself and having the confidence to do things. I want all women to have that feeling, regardless of clothing size.

What's the one best feature of your product?

Katie K is very performance driven. Each item is wicking, moisture controlled etc. But the best feature is that our items are designed to fit a plus size body. We designed the line to fit and flatter a plus size woman's body. Katie K fits and flatters a woman's curves, while also proving the perfect mix of technology and performance with style and fashion.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Having retailers see the importance of the plus size market. Plus size women are a very under served category, and they are starving for stylish and trendy clothing. Convincing retailers to start carrying these sizes has been a challenge, but slowly they are realizing how great a category it can be to have.
