Yakima, the innovation leader in vehicle racks and cargo solutions, has a goal this holiday season: to collect more than 1000 outdoor-related toys for the KGW Portland Great Toy Drive.

To do so, Yakima has launched its inaugural Yakima Toy Drive in Support of KGW and spearheaded outreach to the Portland athletic and outdoor industry. All participating companies – which include adidas, Columbia Sportswear, Icebreaker, KEEN, Nutcase Helmets and OIA Global, plus the Portland State University Athletic and Outdoor Industry Program – received a Yakima SkyBox Pro 16 cargo box, which are to be filled with outdoor activity-related toys. The companies are able to keep the cargo boxes and raffle them off as an incentive to get employees to contribute gifts.

Yakima will collect the gifts from the participating companies and deliver them to KGW on Friday, December 13. KGW’s annual Toy Drive yields over 60,000 gifts for approximately 120 non-profits across the region.

“We are proud that the Portland outdoor industry has come together to support this important toy drive,” said Summer Henderson, Global Marketing Manager at Yakima. “In recent years there has been a significant decrease in athletic and outdoor activity amongst today’s youth. Over 80 percent of children spend an average of three or more hours watching television daily. We think that receiving a soccer ball, hula hoop, or bug collecting kit will inspire kids to leave their screens and get outside...which is the greatest gift we can give children this holiday season.”

Yakima will also have a SkyBox Pro 16 at this Thursday evening’s Annual Athletic and Outdoor Industry Celebration hosted by the Portland Development Commission and the A&O industry council, a group of industry leaders that represent the region’s athletic and outdoor industry for the purposes of economic development. All attendees will be encouraged to bring gifts to contribute.

Added Henderson, “This is a great way for Yakima and the outdoor industry to become involved in our own backyard, and we can’t wait for the kids to get their presents and get into their own backyards.”
