Vasque athlete and Western North Carolina native, Shiloh Mielke continues his strong season with his fifth consecutive victory at the difficult Shut-In Ridge Trail Race this past weekend in Mount Pisgah, NC. This marks Mielke's fourth top finish of the season.

The extreme 18 mile single track race has more than 5,000 feet of cumulative elevation gain and is considered one of the more difficult races in the region. Unusual high temperatures in the 70s and a carpet of downed leaves on the trail made the race even more challenging for the 200 race participants. Mielke's winning time of 2:31:41 is almost 15 minutes slower than his 2007 finish time, and course record, of 2:16:55.

“I went out hard and ran the bulk of my race in the first few miles,” states Mielke, “once I knew I had the lead, and ultimately the race, I let my guard down slightly. Unfortunately, it was just too hot of a day to go for the record.”

Coral Darby, of Darby Communications, was on site volunteering at mile 13.5 “Honestly, I was amazed at how well Shiloh floated through my aid station, especially considering the heat,” said Darby. “I was proud to have him out there representing the Vasque brand, his commitment to trail running and conditioning was prevalent today.”

The Vasque athletes have completed the season with enormous success, overall, the team has acquired twelve first places finishes, four course records and numerous additional podium finishes. Congratulations to the 2009 Vasque Trail team which includes Krissy Moehl of Seattle, WA, Duncan Callahan of Gunnison, CO, Dan Dehlin of Marquette, MI, Shiloh Mielke of Asheville, NC, Bryan Dayton of Boulder, CO, and Debbie Livingston of Bolton, CT.
