United By Blue (UBB), the sustainable outdoor apparel and lifestyle brand with a large focus on waterway conservation, has been awarded the Manufacturing Award at the 8th annual Outdoor Inspiration Awards at Outdoor Retailer and Snow Show 2018, joining the ranks of past winners Patagonia, LifeStraw, and Timbuk2. The Inspiration Awards were created to “recognize various individuals, businesses, and groups for their above-and-beyond passion and ethic to increase outdoor participation.”
“As a conservation brand first, and an outdoor brand second, finding ways to reduce our impact on our over polluted oceans and waterways is at the forefront of our minds,” says Joanna Linton, UBB’s Head of Product. “It’s why we strive to use earth-friendly materials in our efforts to provide ‘responsible, durable goods’ en masse.”
The Manufacturing award takes into account the most innovative newcomer to the outdoor industry, community and employee engagement programs, encouragement to find a work/life balance, sustainable and green manufacturing practices, and interests of diverse cultural and social groups in its mission, operations, and products.
“[United By Blue] believes that products designed for enjoying the outdoors should also be kind to the outdoors, opting for textiles that keep our oceans, air and soil a little cleaner,” says Ethan Zohn, co-host of the Outdoor Inspiration Awards. UBB was nominated for their commitment to create sustainable apparel and accessories using recycled and organic materials. Additionally, for every product sold, UBB removes a pound of trash from the world’s oceans and waterways. To date, they have removed over a million pounds of trash spanning 207 waterway cleanups across 27 states.
The Inspiration Awards is not a new place for UBB. They have been past finalists in years previous and they were a double finalist this year in the Retailer category for their recently opened pending-LEED Platinum certified flagship store in Philadelphia. The Retailer award represents the industry by supporting the needs of consumers, and motivates and inspires others to enjoy, participate in and support outdoor recreation.
“The true change that we’re going to have in this world is from everybody and not just a company like United By Blue,” stressed Brian Linton, UBB’s Founder.
