The effort this summer by Denver schoolteacher Mike Haugen, 31, to climb the highest point in each state within 50 days has resonated with many companies, both within the outdoor industry and beyond. Spearheading the project is Coleman, the outdoor company that sponsored Haugen on a Mount Everest climb in 2007 and is creating a school-based Web site premiering in August for the Coleman® 50 States in 50 Days Challenge.
By July 9, Haugen and his team reached 40 U.S. highpoints in 32 days and were on their way to beat the record of 50 days, seven hours and five minutes set in 2005 by Ben Jones.
Outside of the industry, Toyota has climbed on board with loan of a Highlander Hybrid SUV, the primary means by which Haugen and two teammates are driving 24,000 miles across the country.
Toyota's Highlander Hybrid is a gas/electric mid-size SUV powered by the same Hybrid Synergy Drive found in the Prius. It achieves a combined city-highway fuel economy of 26 mpg, and is rated as a Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV).
“Toyota is proud to support the team's mission and applauds their dedication to raising outdoor awareness,†said Michael Rouse, corporate manager for philanthropy and community relations. “We share their goal of reaching out to young people and encouraging appreciation for our parks and natural places.â€
Other outdoor industry sponsors joining Coleman in this effort are K2, makers of Mt. Baker alpine touring skis used during the ascent of Mount McKinley, which was reached on June 9, thus starting the clock for Haugen's 50-day record attempt.
Haugen and his team are wearing Marmot® clothing during the Adventure. Marmot has provided casual climbing clothing as well as high tech apparel, and SPOT, Inc. is supplying a SPOT Satellite Messenger™ GPS unit that is tracking the team every step of the way.
Haugen hopes to combat increasing rates of childhood obesity due to poor eating and exercise habits by hosting an online virtual challenge that launches in August and continues through December 2008. The public can follow along in real time in July on Coleman's Web site (http://www.coleman.com/50states) to view photos, videos and a blog about his route, equipment, the people he meets, and the nature surrounding each summit.
In addition, the project has reached millions of television viewers and newspaper readers with stories appearing in the Associated Press, Bangor Daily News, Denver Post, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Salt Lake Tribune and many more.
Information about the American highpoints collected by Haugen will help update the Highpoints display at the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum in Golden, Colo. (www.bwamm.org).
Accompanying Haugen on his adventure is Zach Price, 30, an architect and climber from Seattle, and Lindsay Danner, 24, a social work major residing in Denver.
