Torch Hires OutsidePR

Kickstarter-launched cycling company to debut helmets, bags and backpacks

OutsidePR is tremendously pleased to announce that it will commence work immediately with one of the cycling world's most exciting new brands, Torch.

Torch, based in Los Angeles, has just begun manufacturing a line of ground-breaking cycling helmets and will soon begin manufacturing a line of backpacks and messenger bags. The company sprung from a Kickstarter campaign, with 641 investors over-subscribing the original goal of the campaign, which brought in more than $68,000 in funding.

Torch is the brainchild of Nathan Wills, a 32 year-old designer from Southern California who is an avid urban cyclist. He co-founded Brandon + Bradley design after serving as a consulting designer for BMW Group-Designworks USA, Honda R/D and Bright Automotive, where his designs have been featured at the North American International Auto Show and Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum.

All of the products will be CPSE/CE certified and use projection LED technology that is designed to maximize both passive and active visibility. The helmets will be fully adjustable, with a vented polycarbonate shell and expanded polystyrene bodies. The rear of the helmet will feature red LED lighting while the road-illuminating front will use white – both with adjustable patterns for steady and blinking rates. The LEDs are fully protected from the elements by polycarbonate lenses that wrap around the helmet and are sleekly laid flush with the helmet body to give 360 degree visibility.

The button cell batteries powering the lights will be integrated into the design of the helmet; they are expected to deliver full power for more than four hours depending on steady-state or flash mode, and recharge through a standard USB 2.0 charging port. The helmets will be available in two different sizes, three colors and a choice of clear or smoked lenses. Each helmet is expected to weigh only 15 ounces.

The two companies met through Kickstarter, when OutsidePR president Gordon Wright invested in Torch via the crowd-sourced funding platform. “Gordon kicked in a contribution and sent me a nice fan letter,” said Wills. “I heard from at least a half dozen PR firms, but Gordon's approach was very helpful and his agency's experience is really a perfect fit for the company. They have just gone out of their way to help launch the project before we even began working together.”

Torch's Kickstarter campaign is among the most successful in the website's young history and, in fact, helped Torch secure additional equity investment. Feedback from the campaign investors also helped finalize the design of the product, including making kids' sizes and the ability to operate the rear and front lights independently.
