Once again proving that beautiful pieces can be produced from pre-existing resources, conscious jewelry company Tarma Designs introduces a new Seeds & Fruit collection to its Artisan Line, featuring earrings, bracelets and necklaces made from vegetable ivory, or Tagua.

The seed of thorny plants that grows in the humid, tropical lowland forests of South America, Tagua is a sustainable natural resource; meaning, the valuable rain forest in which it grows is not harmed during the cultivation or harvesting process.

Prior to the introduction of plastic, Tagua was once the primary material used to make buttons in the United States and is still a popular medium for artisans in the tropics. Its fruit is much like animal ivory in terms of texture and appearance, and can be carved to produce a wide range of functional and artistic items. Often dyed with vegetable coloring, Tagua can easily take on gem-like, vibrant hues.

During a recent trip to Ecuador, Tarma co-owner Sky George met talented artisan Jaime Luna, a local sculptor and jewelry designer who works mostly in Tagua. Inspired by Luna's striking, tribal designs and the earth-friendly cultivation process of the special Tagua seed, George set out to share this new line of sustainable jewelry with America.

Tarma's Seeds & Fruit collection is characterized by Luna's ornate Hindi design accents, eclectic mix of earthy and modern elements, and bold, polished pigments. Adjustable clasps adorn bracelets and necklaces, and all pieces are affordable works of art. Earrings are $12 and bracelets, pendants and necklaces start at $20.

“We are thrilled to introduce the new Seeds & Fruit collection to our Artisan Line of jewelry,” said George. “Tagua is a smart jewelry choice for aesthetic, ecological and economic reasons, and Luna's attention to detail and unique artistic vision give life and lasting appeal to the designs.”
