BETHEL, Conn. (May 17, 2010) – Executive retreats, liberal time off for childcare, flex-time options, and comprehensive healthcare are reasons Tabar, Inc., a glove manufacturer based in Bethel, Conn., and Bellingham, Wash., was recently ranked seventh among the “50 Best Places to Work” in the outdoor business. This was the highest ranking yet for the privately-held 28-year-old company, which has been on Outside's âœBest Places to Work” list for three consecutive years, and is the only one based in the Metropolitan New York tri-state region.

The list was compiled with the help of the Outdoor Industry Association (outdoorindustry.org) and Best Companies Group (bestcompaniesgroup.com) and appears in the May issue of Outside Magazine.

Tabar designs and manufactures gloves for brands such as Descente, Eastern Mountain Sports, Eddie Bauer, Mountain Hard Wear, and REI.

“Each individual employee at office locations in Bethel, Bellingham and in Hong Kong, Korea and Sri Lanka has helped to shape, create and maintain our unique company culture,” said Gary Schloss, president, a resident of Danbury, Conn.

“Tabar provides an overall atmosphere that empowers each person on staff to feel like they share in the growth and direction of the company.”

The year-long selection process began with an outreach effort that identified a wide range of non-profit and for-profit organizations with at least 15 employees working in the U.S. Participating companies were then sent confidential employee-satisfaction surveys and employer questionnaires to collect information about benefits, compensation, policies, job satisfaction, environmental initiatives, and community outreach programs.

All results were analyzed by Best Companies Group experts, who selected the 50 companies that strive to enhance their employees' enjoyment of active endeavors, and environmental and social involvement.

"These 50 companies come from a vast array of industries but they're all following the same enlightened path," said Michael Roberts, executive editor of Outside.

"They're successful businesses in a challenging economy precisely because they support a proper work-life balance. They know that benefits like on-site gyms and fitness classes, reimbursements for ski passes and sports racing fees, and support for community service efforts during work hours make their employees happier and thus more productive."

Some of the benefits that landed Tabar on the “50 Best Places” list include a full and generous employee benefits package that includes 401K plans, pension plans, HSA medical, vision and dental plans, life and disability insurance, flex time options, and company retreats in adventurous locations for staff and spouses.

Tabar also funds a Save the Children campaign that sponsors a child in need for each full-time employee. Through its employees, Tabar is working to enrich the lives of 22 children worldwide.
