Backpacker Magazine's Summit For Someone, with Ouray, Colo.-based San Juan Mountain Guides, is excited to announce a 4-day beginner mountaineering course for its 2009 season.

Summit For Someone, the No. 1 mountaineering fundraiser in the country, has for four years provided alpine adventures to hundreds of climbers, who raise money for Big City Mountaineers' wilderness programs for at-risk urban youth. But this year's Beginner Mountaineering Course is the first SFS offering that puts an emphasis on teaching participants mountaineering skills.

“We recognize that some of our SFS participants would love a chance to get started on the road to self-sufficiency in the mountains,” said Chris El-Deiry, Summit For Someone program manager. “We're happy to offer climbers a chance to spend four days in the beautiful San Juans learning to become a mountaineer while raising money for a great cause.”

The course is designed for those with some backpacking experience and a desire learn the fundamentals for technical mountain travel. Instruction covers skills including ice axe techniques, self-arrest practice, snow anchors and belays, rope techniques for snow, movement on 4th class and easy 5th class rock faces and ridges, natural rock protection and rope techniques for rock, and steep snow and ice movement skills. On the fourth day of the course, participants will attempt a summit of 14,150-foot Mount Sneffels, via the Southwest Ridge route.

The Beginner Mountaineering Course is just one of 20 different trips offered by Summit For Someone in 2009. Climbs range from beginner and intermediate climbs in Colorado, California, the Pacific Northwest and Wyoming to full-on expeditions in Alaska and Mexico.
