King, Arritola Victorious at Broken Arrow Skyrace Among Snow, Skiers

SQUAW VALLEY, Calif. (June 20, 2017) – Salomon athletes Morgan Arritola and Max King were victorious in the 26K and Vertical Kilometer (VK), respectively, at the Broken Arrow Skyrace in Squaw Valley, California last weekend. Despite a winter of record-breaking snowfall in the High Sierras, the race continued through the snow while passing skiers and riders looked on, offering new obstacles to an already-challenging course.

The 2017 Broken Arrow Skyrace took place June 16 and 17th in Squaw Valley, near Lake Tahoe, and offered three race distances: 52K, 26K and VK. Each race began at the Squaw Valley Village and topped out at the 8,885-foot Squaw Peak. The VK race offered a 5K sprint course with 3100 feet of vertical gain, while the 26K course wrapped around the resort with a staggering 5,297 feet of vertical gain and loss. The 52K race covered two loops around the 26K course, with over 10,500 feet of total gain and loss.

King, 37, of Bend, Oregon, won the 26K distance in 2:17:13, over six minutes ahead of the second-place finisher, while Arritola, 31, of Boise, crushed the women’s race in 2:45:46.

Arritola also won the Vertical K race in 47:18, with fellow Salomon runner Anna Mae Flynn close behind in second. King finished second in the men’s VK race, finishing in 43:21. In the women's 52K, Stevie Kremer and Flynn snagged second and third, respectively.

Difficult in dry conditions, the Broken Arrow Skyrace proved to be even more challenging after a winter of heavy snowfall, as much of the Squaw Valley resort remained covered in snow at the onset of the race. With upper lifts set to remain open on weekends through July 4, volunteers had their work cut out for them preparing for the race. Runners were surely a spectacle to skiers and riders, while T-shirt-clad skiers provided their own entertainment as runners charged by.
