Ryan Sutter to race and raise funds for two nonprofits

Sutter will ride a 100-mile bike race and participate in a 120-mile pair relay run to raise $10,000 for First Descents and GrassRoots Soccer.

Denver, CO - Celebrity athlete Ryan Sutter recently announced his intent to raise $10,000 for First Descents and GrassRoots Soccer this August. Over the course of nine days, Sutter will compete in The Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race and the six day, 120-mile GOR-TEX TransRockies. The Leadville 100 race starts Aug.11 and the GORE-TEX TransRockies Run begins just two days later on Aug. 14 and goes through Aug. 19. Sutter will be doing The Leadville solo and will join fellow Vail firefighter, Johnny LoFaro for the TransRockies race.

Sutter is familiar to many people as the winner of The Bachelorette in 2002, a reality TV show that runs on ABC. Sutter was chosen by his now wife, Trista Rehn, on the dating show and married her on television in December 2003. Sutter is also close friends with both founders of each of the nonprofits. GrassRoots Soccer founder, Ethan Zohn is a professional soccer player and a fellow reality TV star having won Survivor: Africa. First Descents Founder, Brad Ludden and Sutter met many years ago.

“I am a huge fan of Brad and First Descents,” said Sutter. “This program gives cancer survivors and fighters an experience that is bar none to any other program out there. As someone who is lucky enough to be healthy, I know how much being in the outdoors and interacting with nature and others in that environment helps me maintain my level of health. Passing that gift to others is a truly noble effort.”

The funds that Sutter raises will cover the cost of sending five first time First Descents participants to a surfing, kayaking or climbing program.

“Support from people like Ryan is a big part of First Descent's continued success,” said Ludden. “He is one of the strongest athletes I have ever met and a genuinely kind and giving person. You really can't put a price tag on that kind of support.”
