Marathoner Fernando Cabada, a member of Newton Running Elite (formerly called Team Alchemy), is among the top U.S. runners competing at this year’s Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. Cabada, who is confident he can run a personal best marathon time at Boston, hopes his performance there will earn him a spot on the U.S. team going to August’s Marathon World Championships in Moscow. His long-term goal is to represent the U.S. at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“Fernando’s intense focus and hard work is an inspiration to the entire team and all of Newton Running,” says team executive sponsor Stephen Gartside. “We’re proud to support such a talented athlete who has overcome significant challenges in his personal and professional lives to represent the U.S. and Newton Running on the international stage.”

Cabada, who grew up amid gang culture and constant violence in his California neighborhood, chose at an early age to use his natural running talent as his vehicle for a better life. After a stand-out collegiate running career including seven track and cross country titles, he burst onto the elite American running scene in 2006 when he took the U.S. 25K National Championship title in Grand Rapids Michigan in 1:14:21, breaking two-time Olympian Ed Eyestone’s record by 17 seconds. In 2008 Cabada won the U.S. marathon championships at the Twin Cities Marathon with a time of 2:16:32.

When injury struck in 2008, Cabada fell out of competitive running for several years and became despondent. Eventually, however, time away from the sport reignited his determination to fulfill his potential. He sought help from physical therapist Jay Dicharry, author of the book Anatomy for Athletes, to overcome his biomechanical weaknesses and adopt a natural running stride. The results were outstanding. Cabada scored his second 25K national championship title in 2011 and ran a PR of 2:11:53 at placed seventh at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Houston, Texas, last year.

Now in the best shape of his life, Cabada expects to be one of the top American runners on April 15.

Cabada is a member of Newton Running Elite, a 13-person squad including Newton Running employees and semi-professional runners who compete in events ranging from one to 100 miles on roads and trails in Newton Running shoes, which are designed to actively support and strengthen natural running motion.

Cabada will be wearing the team’s newly branded, bright green and yellow race kit. Information about Newton Team Elite can be found at www.newtonrunningelite.com and on Facebook. Newton Running shoes are available at specialty running retailers and www.NewtonRunning.com.
