CARSON CITY, Nev., March 10 -- The Nevada Passage Wide Open is a new adventure competition being launched by the Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT) in Winnemucca May 6-7.

The "Wide Open" event features human-powered competitions including mountain-bike racing on the "Bloody Shins Trail" and kayaking on the Humboldt River May 6 and an off-road scramble run to the summit of Winnemucca Mountain May 7. Winnemucca is on Interstate 80 in Northern Nevada, 165 miles east of Reno.

The two-day event also will include an ATV jamboree at Winnemucca's Regional Raceway. Participants must bring their own ATVs to participate in the competitions, which include an ATV pull, sand drags and a rodeo-skills event to maneuver around and over a series of obstacles.

"The Nevada Passage Wide Open advances NCOT's long-running adventure focus with a new competition that we expect will bring hundreds of adventure travelers to Winnemucca," NCOT Director Bruce Bommarito said. "This event will demonstrate that Nevada's landscape is wide open for exciting adventures people are seeking."

Individuals can register for The Nevada Passage Wide Open online at www.nevadapassage.com or by calling 877-751-8880. Registration fees for human-powered events (mountain-bike racing, kayaking and running) range from $15 to $25 per event or $45 for all three. The ATV jamboree is $15 per event or $30 for all three. A portion of the ATV fees will benefit the Winnemucca Regional Raceway. All entries include a commemorative T-shirt and a celebration party.

All of the "Wide Open" competitions will include multiple divisions to appeal to people of all age groups and experience levels. The top three finishers in each event division will win awards. In addition, a special trophy will be awarded to the fastest finisher of the three human-powered events.
