Mountainsmith has taken a leadership position by applying bluesign® approved PET fabrics from Taiwanese HO YU Textile Company, LTD for the 2010 production of the company's All Terrain, Lumbar and select Camera packs. Mountainsmith's new ReDura™ PET fabric will also be coated with a bluesign® approved water-based Polyurethane (PU) coating. The independent bluesign® standard is a guarantee that the new recycled fabric only contains components that are harmless both to people and to the environment. Swiss-based bluesign® technologies ag is the most recognizable third-party eco-auditor in the world.

Leadership positions are not new to Mountainsmith. In 2006, they were the first outdoor company to bring recycled fabric technology to modern pack design with the introduction of the Recycled Tour and Recycled Day lumbar packs, using 100% post consumer PET bottles. ISO 9001- and 14001-certified HO YU Textile Company has been their partner from the beginning and was one of the first recycled PET textile manufacturers in the outdoor industry.

Luke Boldman, Mountainsmith's lead designer and product line manager, stated that the “HO YU Textile Company's commitment to the bluesign® standard ensures not only the quality of our pack cloth but also the quality and responsibility of our selected manufacturing practices.”

The bluesign® standard was established in 2000 in response to the demand for textile products that are environmentally friendly, pose no health hazards, and conserve resources to the greatest possible extent. It can be applied to the entire production chain from raw material to final product, from chemical supplier to consumers. Prior to production, every component is assessed and receives a rating based on its ecotoxicological impact, eliminating potentially harmful substances before production even begins.
