Those dedicated Mountainsmith followers who thought that the Ghost and Phantom were spirits of the past rejoiced this year on their rebirth in the new Mountainlight Series. The line is similar in function and lightweight but carries a contemporary look and trademarked suspension features. The Haze 50 minimalist pack, Spectre 35 trail/travel pack and Spirit 12 bike/run/hiking pack are new for 2013. They are all designed to accommodate current trends that are dominated by the need for packable, light and fast trail and travel use as well as shorter three to five day backpacking trips.

No matter the product, Mountainsmith designers are expert at making packs of all kinds to comfortably carry loads of any size. This line does not disappoint. The new Haze 50 and Spectre 35 utilize trademarked suspension features that include Iliac Crest Shelfâ„¢ (ICSâ„¢) hip belts and Lumbar Control Pointâ„¢ (LCP) padding that accentuate the body's natural ability to bear weight on the skeleton and provide a more comfortable ride on the shoulders. This technology, coupled with the Breezewayâ„¢ trampoline style back panel allows backpackers to cover more miles, more comfortably than ever before. The lightweight Spirit 12 utilizes the Breezeway backpanel with an adjustable waistbelt.

The Haze 50 and Spectre 35 are unisex-sized and share some key features. They are panel loader packs with open air suspension frames. In reverse of a traditional waistbelt, the prominent curvature is at the top instead of the bottom and will optimize load transfer and help distribute the weight comfortably on the iliac crest hip bone. Perforated air-flow shoulder straps provide comfort and increased circulation. Airmesh padding on waistbelts and shoulder straps incorporate a DWR (Durable Water Repellant) anti-sweat finish. An internal hydration bladder sleeve is accessible through a centrally located exit port. Other features include side compression straps, tool and trekking pole mount loops, front stash pockets to fit Ten Essentials and side pockets for SIGG and Nalgene style water bottles.

The Breezeway Trampoline suspension system on the dual panel loader Spirit 12 delivers breathability and comfortable carrying capacity for fast and light bike, run and light hiking excursions. The hydration sleeve with dual shoulder strap ports is an important feature for these types of adrenalin activities. A mesh gel pocket on the shoulder strap, diamond airmesh foam with DWR anti-seat finish and one-inch adjustable waistbelt add comfort. The reflective highlights, bungee deep side mesh pockets and organization panel to hold a bike tire pump add convenience.
