Red Wing, MN – July 13, 2011 – Vasque footwear and Sierra Magazine are excited to co-host a book signing for Shelton Johnson, author of the celebrated novel, Gloryland (Sierra Club Books, 2009), at Summer OR in support of Sierra Club's Inner City Outings. The event will run from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M. on Friday, August 5, at the Vasque booth #12001.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Johnson has worked for the National Parks Service for 24 years and currently serves as a ranger in Yosemite National Park. In 2009 he was featured in the Ken Burns PBS documentary, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, and he later attended its preview at the White House, where he discussed the film with President Obama. He also introduced Oprah Winfrey to Yosemite in October 2010, where she spent two days camping as well as filming a two-part special for the show.

Johnson is slated to be the guest speaker at the Conservation Alliance Breakfast on August 5 and will be giving a speech on “Diversity and Wilderness.”A strong advocate for increasing diversity in the National Parks, Johnson has traveled around the country presenting his original living-history program about a buffalo soldier and has received many awards and honors for his work. His book, Gloryland, is a fictitious account of an African-American buffalo soldier who finds a deep connection to nature while stationed in the newly created Yosemite National Park. The Sierra Club-supported Inner City Outings Program consists of 50 groups throughout the US that conduct multiple outings for inner-city youth to teach them to enjoy the outdoors safely and responsibly. By helping these participants discover the beauty of wild lands, ICO is able to build support for environmental protection in urban communities. For additional information about ICO visit their website: www.sierraclub.org/ico.

The quantity of books at the signing will be limited, and donations for the Inner City Outings Program are encouraged.
