Mammut climbing athletes continue to take the lead in competitions around the world, with the most recent win coming from 2010's first Bouldering World Cup, held last week in Grelfensee, Switzerland. Mammut USA climbing team athlete Alex Johnson battled it out against five other top-talent climbers in the final round to take first place.

Still new to the Mammut climbing team, Johnson continues to impress with a string of strong finishes in recent competitions, including a 2nd place at the recent Earth Treks Competition last month.

“The weather was a little temperamental, but the competition went on as planned on the new outdoor wall,” said Johnson. “The problems were really tough, set by French route setter Jacky Godoffe. The end results truly surprised me, and I am incredibly psyched and honored to have taken home the gold in such a strong field of girls!"

Chief route setter Jacky Godoffe created the problems under heavy influence of his love for Fontainebleu, France's fabled bouldering destination. Much like “The Font”, the holds in the final round were akin to slabby sandstone and “slopers” – formations that are difficult to grab and hold on to – adding significant technical difficulty to the formidable finals route.

“Alex is only on the cusp of her overall climbing abilities,” said Dean Lords, athlete team manager for Mammut USA. “She is a fierce competitor, a brilliant and driven boulderer, and easily crosses over into roped climbing. I believe we will continue to see many great accomplishments from Alex as her professional climbing career progresses.”

Keep an eye out for Johnson at all upcoming Bouldering World Cup comps this year, including the Teva Mountain Games stop in Vail, Colorado, June 4th and 5th.
