KONAWORLD - As the bicycling community continues to grow in urban areas, so does its culture and voice. For more than 20 years, the Kona Bicycle Company has been creating bikes for each specific riders needs – from mountain to kids to commuter. On Thursday May 6, the Bike Culture Summit will commence in New York City and Kona Bikes will be there in full support.

A benefit for Transportation Alternatives – an organization whose mission is to reclaim New York City's streets from the automobile and to advocate for bicycling, walking and public transit as the best transportation alternatives – all proceeds from the event will support the groups bicycle advocacy work.

“Cycling is experiencing huge growth in urban environments and it's important to see who we are and where we're headed as a culture,” says Cory Blackwood, Kona's Advocacy Guy. “Transportation Alternatives is an organization dedicated to getting more cyclists on the road in NYC and making roads safer for those cyclists. Taking a good look at who we are will help achieve these goals.”

In an effort to get behind the expanding culture, the Bike Culture Summit will be held May 6 at NYU's Wasserman Center Auditorium from 7-8:30 p.m. Cycling pundits, the ‘Bike Snob', bicycling historian David Herlihy and Caroline Samponaro (Director of Bicycle Advocacy for Transportation), will offer their expert insight regarding controversies such as ‘How should cyclists relate to pedestrians, motorists and to delivery cyclist' and ‘To what extent should cyclists sacrifice style and convenience for safety.'

From ‘cycle chic' to ‘share the damn road' jerseys to Lance Armstrong's recent tweets aimed at ESPN's Tony Kornheiser, cyclists are making an impact to help define what it means to be an urban cyclist. So, join the Kona Bicycle Company in its support of bike culture and the future of bicycle advocacy - it's time to join the conversation.
