Kokatat Supports Second Leg of “7 rivers, 7 continents” Project

In early June, Kokatat supported athlete Mark Kalch will depart down the Missouri-Mississippi River, the second source to sea paddle in his "7 rivers, 7 continents" project.

ARCATA, CALIFORNIA, May 22, 2012 – In early June, Kokatat supported athlete Mark Kalch will depart down the Missouri-Mississippi River, the second source to sea paddle in his "7 rivers, 7 continents" project. In 2008 Kalch completed a descent of the Amazon River and plans to complete source to sea descents of the longest river on each of the continents.

Beginning in Brower’s Spring, Montana, Kalch will kayak nearly 4,000 miles before reaching the terminus of the Mississippi where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana. The journey is expected to take about 5 months to complete.

“The great rivers of the world have shaped the very existence of humans and the ecosystems in which they live,” said Kalch. “As a result water security and scarcity is fast becoming one of the planet’s most pressing issues.”

During each expedition Kalch will use multimedia storytelling and a unique online platform to tell the stories of these rivers and its people.

Following the completion of the Amazon and Missouri - Mississippi River Kalch will eye the rivers on the remaining five continents.
