Portland, OR – January 2014 –For Fall 2014 KEEN adds the Durand collection to its industry leading hiking selection, establishing the brand as a comprehensive hiking resource with styles for any trail adventure. The Durand collection offers hikers looking to log serious miles a full-featured, durable option from KEEN. The Durand WP Mid and Low (MSRP $180/$160) compliment the versatile Targhee, KEEN’s number one selling hiking style, the light hiking Marshall collection, a 2013 fan favorite, and the low profile multi-sport CNX collection.
Built in KEEN’s backyard at its Portland, Oregon factory, the Durand features a unique direct-inject construction technique that attaches a water-proof Nubuck leather and breathable mesh upper directly to the midsole resulting in unprecedented durability.
Designed to offer the wearer underfoot support, cushioning and protection on long hikes, the Durand employs a PU blended midsole and integrated heel cushion that rebound step after step. In a compression test conducted to demonstrate how the Durand resists compacting overtime, results showed after one million steps, the KEEN PU midsole compressed 3 percent vs. more than 50 percent compression of a traditional EVA midsole.
“Our midsole material keeps its cushioning, protective and stabilizing qualities, from the first step to the millionth.” said Jeff Dill, KEEN’s outdoor business unit director. “The Durand also offers an integrated heel cushion that locks directly into the insole to support the foot while maximizing shock absorption for comfort hikers can trust.”
Built for varying terrain, the Durand features a dual-compound outsole that combines two distinct types of rubber - one around the edges to maximize edging and grip, and another in the center to maximize durability in high wear areas. The KEEN.DRY waterproof membrane makes the Durand unstoppable in wet conditions. A lightweight and rigid TPU shank adds stability and midfoot support.
“Superior construction combined with comfort-driven design make the Durand styles a must-have for hikers looking to log countless miles with each step as comfortable as the first.” said Dill. “Hikers have come to expect top-quality products from KEEN, because of our promise of fit, comfort and durability. For Fall 2014, we’re building on our reputation as a go-to trail resource by offering a vast array of styles from light day hikers, all the way to backpacking hikers ready to spend miles out on the Pacific Crest Trail.”
Using premium construction techniques, the Durand WP is built only five miles from KEEN’s headquarters in Portland, Oregon. Opened in 2010, the Portland Factory is a 15,000 square foot facility that assembles shoes using a direct-inject process, which adheres the outsole of the shoe directly to the upper- significantly increasing durability. KEEN envisions the Portland Factory as more than a manufacturing plant, but as a space for teaching and learning, where customers and community can observe the cutting-edge of footwear manufacturing.
