Portland, OR – September 14, 2010 – KEEN, Inc. – a leader in hybrid outdoor performance products – has announced a new phase of their partnership with 88bikes Foundation. They will be working with the nonprofit to help launch and support the organization’s new 88bikes Toolkit program. The program will kick off at the Interbike International Trade Show Expo, which is being held in Las Vegas from September 22 through 24.

The mission of 88Bikes Foundation is to provide bikes - a sustainable, joyful, empowering form of transportation - to young people in developing countries who have been affected by war, conflict, poverty, disease, or other regional hardships. To do so, they rely on individual donations of $88, which is the approximate cost of a bike in most developing countries.

The new 88bikes Toolkit program is for those who want to help spread the joy of bicycles with the 88bikes Foundation at a lower donation amount. A $40 donation will fund one bike maintenance kit, which includes tubes, tires and tools. It will also pay for a local bike mechanic who will work with an 88bikes volunteer to fix bikes that need repair and to train the kids to work on their own bikes. In return, donors will receive a photograph of the group of kids at the organization that receives the kit.

The program will also give 88bikes a base for building ongoing relationships with the international organizations that receive the bikes, and will add to the strength of the 88bikes volunteer program.

To launch 88bikes Toolkit, KEEN is providing matching funds for donations made at Interbike. Every $20 donated will be matched 100 percent by KEEN. Starting this fall, people can also donate to 88bikes Toolkit through the 88bikes website, and KEEN will extend their matching program through the end of 2010.

“88bikes embodies our company motto of HybridLife “Create Play Care- It’s a Way of Life.” Around the world, 88bikes is reaching out to kids who have had incredibly challenging lives, creating new ways for them to live and play. KEEN is thrilled to support this life-changing kind of caring,” said Linda Tom, Marketing Manager at KEEN.

Said Dan Austin, founder of 88Bikes,”At the heart of 88bikes' philosophy and efforts is the one-to-one connection between donor and child. The 88bikes Toolkit program, and KEEN's support, allows us to offer a one-to-one connection at lower donation level."

About 88Bikes
88Bikes was started in 2006 by Dan Austin, Nicolas Arauz, and Jared Austin. In November 2006, 88Bikes launched its first project, in partnership with the Friends of Cambodian Children, to raise funds for 88 bikes. After exceeding its fundraising goal in just two weeks, the organization gave 88 bikes to 88 kids at the Palm Tree Orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in January 2007.

In January of 2008, 88bikes completed its second project with the Global Youth Partnership for Africa in Patongo, Uganda, donating 200 bikes to children at a refugee camp in this war-torn region of Northern Uganda. 88bikes has since added endowment locations in Uganda, Peru, Vietnam, Nepal, India and Ghana. They are currently in the midst of their fifth project, VILLAGES.

It doesn't always take a massive relief organization to tip the scales for joy and sustainability in places where children and young adults are challenged to be their own heroes. 88bikes provides a simple and direct opportunity to make a difference for a young person in the world: buy a child a bike!
