Karhu’s XCD Guide Ski Wins 2008/2009 SnowPress Innovation Award

The Karhu XCD Guide Cross-Country Downhill ski has won the SnowPress Magazine Innovation Award in the Ski Culture category during the magazine’s second annual honoring of the best innovations in the snowsports industry.

The Karhu XCD Guide Cross-Country Downhill ski has won the SnowPress Magazine Innovation Award in the Ski Culture category during the magazine's second annual honoring of the best innovations in the snowsports industry. The XCD Guide was chosen to receive the award at the SnowSports Industries of America 2008 tradeshow by the editors of SnowPress due to the XCD concept's impact on backcountry skiing when first introduced 30 years ago and its representation of Karhu's continued commitment to producing gear that opens the door to exploration of a deeper winter.

“Thirty years ago, Karhu's XCD glided toward a revolution in ski mountaineering that married deep-powder descents with epic cross-country tours,” writes SnowPress' Peter Kray. “With the XCD Guide, a full-metal edge ski with an Omnitrak NoWax base, Karhu re-embraces its freeheel roots while embracing a new future of mountain-bike style backcountry adventure of wide-ranging tours and turns.”

January 2008 marks the 30th year since the birth of Karhu's XCD concept, which married downhill and Nordic qualities – metal edges, Nordic builds, new sidecuts and cambers capable of touring and turning – in a single ski that became a legend. The ski was christened the XCD, the perfect encapsulation of its purpose, Cross-Country Downhill. To a larger extent, it opened up a new world of backcountry possibilities and captured the essence of the whole telemark revival, as the nascent sport's pioneers embraced the innovative new design and discovered new peaks, descents, traverses and adventures only imagined before.

Because of XCD, Karhu understands that the turn alone lacks the satisfaction of the earn, and the tour is enhanced by the thrill of the descent. The heart of the adventure is the blend of the two, and that marriage of styles – that Karhu DNA – will continue to define the brand for years to come.

“We're honored to receive this award,” said Karhu Marketing Manager Graham Gephart. “The XCD Guide reflects the same excitement about exploration that began 30 years ago, our commitment to product innovation and the adventurous spirit of XCD Backcountry.”
