June 1: Fjallraven Boulder Hosts Fundraiser for Himalayan Stove Project

Publish date:

BOULDER (May 30, 2017) – Fjallraven, the Swedish Outdoor brand whose flagship store at 1048 Pearl Street opened in Boulder last fall, will host a fundraiser for the nonprofit Himalayan Stove Project on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at 6 to 8 p.m. (presentation at 7 p.m.).

The first 25 attendees will receive a free poster commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first American-led Mt. Everest Expedition in 1963.

The Himalayan Stove Project (HSP), based in Taos, N.M., is dedicated to preserving the Himalayan environment and improving the health of the people living there. It provides clean-burning, fuel-efficient cookstoves designed in Ft. Collins, Colo. by Envirofit International, as replacements to traditional stoves or open-fire pits which cause unsafe levels of indoor air pollution and use excess fuel.

The founder of the HSP, George Basch, 80, will explain how the Envirofit cookstoves reduce indoor air pollution by up to 90 percent, are 75 percent more fuel-efficient, and cook 50 percent faster.

Since 2010, the HSP has shipped over 4,100 fuel-efficient cookstoves to the remote mountainous communities of Nepal, helping to reduce Household Air Pollution (HAP), the cause of 4.3 million premature deaths worldwide per year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Basch, the recipient of The Explorers Club 2017 Citation of Merit award,

has circled the globe as an adventurer, explorer, photographer and creative entrepreneur. He holds a degree in mechanical engineering from MIT, and an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

There is no admission to attend the talk. Ten percent of store sales during the presentation will be donated to the HSP. Luminaid lightweight, waterproof solar-powered lights (retail value: $20) will be offered in thanks for every donation of $25 or more. For collectors of expedition memorabilia, a poster commemorating the first American ascent of Mt. Everest in 1963, and signed by Conrad Anker, Sir Chris Bonington, Tom Hornbein, and others, will be auctioned off during the fundraiser.

The Himalayan Stove Project is based at 1335 Paseo del Pueblo Sur #305
