LANDER, WY— The Wilderness Education Association (WEA) presented James Mills with the Paul K. Petzoldt Leadership Award, at the 2016 International Conference on Outdoor Leadership this past weekend.

The WEA was founded in 1977 to train leaders with decision-making skills to teach the public how to responsibly enjoy Wilderness areas.

According to the WEA, the criteria for receiving the Paul K. Petzoldt Leadership Award includes someone who has made “significant contributions to the field of Outdoor Leadership” and “has had outstanding influence within the profession”

Mills, a NOLS graduate of Alaska Mountaineering - Prime ‘12, received this award for his work on The Adventure Gap, a book chronicling Expedition Denali, the first all African-American team to attempt climbing Denali as well as a history of diversity in the outdoors.

“To have the work of Expedition Denali, An American Ascent and The Adventure Gap acknowledged in this way is a recognition not only of the dedicated efforts of the many men and women who inspire minority youth to spend time in the outdoors,” said Mills.

“It demonstrates the commitment of experiential education institutions across the county to make their programs and initiatives more diverse and inclusive. It is only when we make outdoor recreation accessible to everyone that we will preserve the sanctity of the natural world for future generations.”

Mills was also the Keynote speaker at the International Conference on Outdoor Leadership, which was held in California, PA this past weekend.
