BOSTON - May 15, 2006 - The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) announced today that more than ten personal training certification organizations are currently accredited or in the process of receiving accreditation of their programs from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

“We applaud and thank these groups for taking this very important step, which reflects the industry's efforts to improve safety and effectiveness in personal training certification programs,” said John McCarthy, executive director of IHRSA. “By doing so, we are taking real steps to enhance personal training practices and the experience of health club patrons.”

IHRSA's Board of Directors adopted a resolution in March of 2005 that recommended that, beginning January 1, 2006, IHRSA clubs hire personal trainers holding at least one current certification from a certifying organization/agency that has begun third-party accreditation of its certification procedures and protocols from an independent, experienced, and nationally recognized accrediting body. IHRSA has identified the NCCA as an appropriate accreditation organization.

The following personal training certification organizations have either earned accreditation or are in the process of receiving accreditation of their programs from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA):

American College of Sports Medicine
American Council on Exercise
The Cooper Institute
International Fitness Professionals Association
National Exercise Trainers Association
National Academy of Sports Medicine
National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association
National Council of Strength & Fitness
National Federation of Professional Trainers
National Strength & Conditioning Association
Pilates Method Alliance

The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) is proud to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2005-2006. Over the past quarter of a century, the not-for-profit association has established itself as the voice of quality and innovation for the global health, racquet, and sportsclub industry representing over 7,000 clubs in 74 countries, along with over 600 industry suppliers.
