Windham Mountain, Windham NY - - When Marcia Meirowitz and Betsy Rich conceived of the idea of snowboarding instruction for women who may have been loath to try it, their vision was of a 3-day event that would instruct and empower. So this week’s snowstorm didn’t daunt the program in the least.
“This snow is making the event even better,” Rich, a heart disease survivor, said. “We’ve got a dedicated group of about 15 women and we’ve combined snowboarding lessons, information on equipment and fashion, yoga, fundraising for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement and learning how to make heart healthy decisions through sessions that make our lives richer.”
Rebecca Keller, Ph.D., will wrap up the group’s three days by talking about heart health on Friday morning, Feb. 4, at 8:30 a.m. in the Legends Lounge on the third floor of the base lodge. Keller is a researcher at Albany Medical College; assistant dean of students at Albany Medical College; and a member of the American Heart Association’s Capital Region Advisory Board.
“The Go Red for Women movement is asking women to make it their mission to tell other women about heart health,” Keller said. “I Heart Snowboarding is a group that has taken action to get more active and improve their heart health, and now they can go spread the word. I’m glad to have the chance to talk about heart health with this group.”
“When Marcia and Betsy first approached us about I Heart Snowboarding, we were excited about it,” said Franz Krickl Snow Sports School director at Windham Mountain. “Women take care of their jobs, their families and their friends, and it’s great to see this group taking care of itself. A lot of women ski, ride and have fun at our tubing park, and we want to do what we can to help them improve their health.”
I Heart Snowboarding began on Wednesday, Feb. 2, and will wrap up on National Wear Red Day, Friday, Feb. 4, in the afternoon. Following Dr. Keller’s talk, the group will don red T-shirts to commemorate National Wear Red Day and have their photo taken at about 9:15 a.m.
