HIMALAYAN STOVE PROJECT INCREASES CLEAN COOK STOVE
DELIVERIES 19 PERCENT
Latest Shipment of 577 Envirofit Stoves Earmarked for
Rural Homes, Hospitals, Schools in Nepal
SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 1, 2016) – The people of Nepal just breathed a tiny bit easier. The non-profit Himalayan Stove Project (HSP), based in Taos, N.M., today announced the arrival of another 577 stoves to its distribution center in the Nepal capital of Kathmandu, thus increasing the six-year-old organization’s distribution of clean, energy efficient cook stoves by 19 percent.
The announcement was made today by HSP founder George “Chief Cook” Basch just prior to the start of the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market trade show, home to a number of the organization’s corporate sponsors including: adidas Outdoor, Kahtoola, MSR, Sea to Summit, and others.
This latest shipment brings to 3,641 the number of cook stoves sent to Nepal, in addition to $100,000 in earthquake support the HSP provided after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal in April 2015.
The new cook stoves, designed by Envirofit, a non-profit based in Ft. Collins, Colo., replace primitive open fires and reduces indoor air pollution by 90 percent with 75 percent less fuel.
If stacked one on top of the other, the cook stoves already shipped to Nepal would reach one-third of the way to the summit of Mount Everest.
Stoves will be distributed in September 2016 after the Himalayan monsoons abate. Among the recipients are the Nepal Cleft & Burn Center in Kathmandu, the village of Chupar in the Himalayan foothills, and households in the village of Yangri Kharka in the Makalu Valley under the direction of The North Face ski mountaineer Kit DesLauriers.
“This effort helps clear the air in Nepal, and is another significant step in our campaign to reach thousands more,” said HSP’s George Basch, who plans a fourth container shipment of 577 single family domestic and larger institutional models in March 2017.
“This has been a difficult time for the country and we devoted much of our resources after the earthquake to provide a variety of emergency supplies. Now, thankfully, we’re back to our primary mission of distributing clean cook stoves to the people of Nepal,” Basch said.
In other HSP news, the organization signed an agreement with adidas Outdoor to provide discounts to its donors. As part of the new offer, for every dollar that supporters donate to the HSP over $150, and in increments of $150 thereafter, they will receive the same amount back as a discount when they order from adidasOutdoor.com. The offer applies to products priced at least twice the amount of the donation.
