Some things can only happen in Vegas, but ovarian cancer can happen anywhere. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and the nationally televised USA CRITS Finals, held September 25 at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino is enabling the HERA Women's Cancer Foundation to reach millions with their message to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. The messengers are not survivors or non-profit board members, but the drag queens of Lucky Cheng's.

"We may not have ovaries, but we do care about ovarian cancer,” says Miss Conception, the emcee of Lucky Cheng's, a drag queen cabaret that started in New York City's East Village and is now at the Harmon Theater at the Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas. “We think this is a fun way to raise awareness about ovarian cancer and give it an usual twist.” The performers hope to capture the public's attention to raise awareness of this under recognized women's health threat. Miss Conception will be joined Lucky Cheng's Chi Chi Alexis Dealer and Elena Perez.

Female cyclists will wear teal race bibs and bracelets. Teal is the official color of the fight against ovarian cancer. Symptoms cards and educational materials will be distributed at the event's vendor expo and a raffle will be held for a mountain bike from Giant. A portion of the money raised through the raffle will go to supporting local efforts in Las Vegas to fight the ovarian cancer as HERA once again joins forces with the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Nevada.

Approximately 75 percent of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, after the cancer has spread beyond the ovary. That means that even though donors may be tightening their belts, educating people about the disease's symptoms is still vital.

"Ovarian cancer is like breast cancer 30 years ago. Once we started talking about breast cancer, we saw more women diagnosed early and more survivors," explains ovarian cancer survivor and HERA founder Sean Patrick. "Only 24 percent of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed early so making women aware of symptoms is vital."

"When we discovered the lack of awareness of ovarian cancer we saw that our races could enable HERA to deliver their message to a large number of participants and spectators during televised events,” explains Ravi Rajcoomar, managing director of Swagger, the sports marketing and events company that produces the races.
