Half-Moon Outfitters Hosts 2nd Annual Golden Nugget SUP Race

Half-Moon Outfitters raises $1000 for the Mt. Pleasant Land Conservancy through the Second Annual Golden Nugget SUP Race.

October 16, 2011 – Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Beautiful weather at scenic Shem Creek provided the backdrop for the highly succesful Second Annual Half-Moon Outfitters Golden Nugget SUP Race. One of the highlights of the Charleston, SC area, Shem Creek is the home for shrimp boats and watermen alike. This picturesque spot recently was home to the Golden Nugget SUP Race which raised $1000 for the Mt. Pleasant Land Conservancy.

The Golden Nugget Race was split into two categories: a Recreational 5k and an Elite 10k. Over 80 people participated in the event, with one coming from as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada. The Golden Nugget Elite SUP race is an official sanctioned event for the World Paddle Association, which is dedicated to the future of Stand Up Paddle Sports.

Winners for the 10K were Bruce Brunson for men and April Zilg for women. Winners for the 5K were Jeremy Whitted for men and Kate Borg for women.

“The race conditions were ideal and everyone had fun out on the water. SUP is such an exciting new sport for the lowcountry and it's nice to see athletes from all over come here to participate in an event that raises money for such a worthwhile cause,” said Sara Harris, one of the race directors.

Proceeds from the event went to the Mt. Pleasant Land Conservancy, which exists to protect land, natural resources and important civic open spaces throughout Charleston County.

John Girault, Executive Director for the Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy said “This year's event exceeded our expectations in attendance and money raised toward our land protection efforts. Partnering with Half-Moon Outfitters proved to be another extremely successful aspect of the event and their donation to the Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy shows a continued commitment to supporting our community and the natural world we all love and need!”

Half-Moon Outfitters is especially grateful to all the sponsors who helped to make the race such a success including Patagonia, Naish, Surftech, Werner, GoPro, Boardworks Surf and FCS.
