September 7, 2012, Charlottesville, VA—The Ultra Race of Champions (UROC) recently announced its multi-year contract with Competitor magazine and now proudly adds another multi-year sponsor: GU Energy has joined the UROC sponsor ranks for 2012 and 2013.
"GU and ultimately the gel category, was created specifically for the ultra-endurance community," states GU Energy's President and CEO Brian Vaughn. "These athletes embody strength, dedication, passion and the desire to test the limits of the human body. They have and will always be the true core of who we are as a company."
Tyler Clark, Field Marketing Manager for GU comments further: "The origins of GU can be traced back to the sport of ultra-running and UROC provides the perfect playground for our ever growing Roctane Ultra Endurance product line. The sport of trail running has long been searching for a pinnacle race and we are thrilled to be aligned with an event geared at attracting the world’s best."
While attracting the world's best remains the driving goal of UROC, the 100K race, and shorter distance sister races (Uber Rock 50K and Cruxy Half Marathon) are open to all runners. Brian Metzler, Editor-in-Chief at Competitor Magazine has followed the progress of the race and the sport. As an ultra runner himself, he notes: "The inaugural UROC event last year brought together many of the country's top ultra runners, and this year's race figures to be even more competitive. Gill and Francesca have created a championship-caliber race with a festival atmosphere that appeals to runners of all abilities. An event like this has been long overdue as ultra running has exploded in growth over the past decade."
World Mountain Running Champion Max King is no stranger to world-class racing. He comes to this year's Ultra Race of Champions fully aware of the elite competition, ready to race, and to challenge his peers. "UROC is an amazing opportunity for the best in the ultra running sport to test themselves on a course that favors no one" says King. "May the best all around runner win."
The 2012 Ultra Race of Champions (UROC) will take place on Saturday, September 29th just outside of Charlottesville, VA in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains. At Wintergreen Resort, on a mixed course of road and trail, the world’s best ultrarunners (see list below) will battle it out for a share of the $20,000 UROC cash purse.
