Medicines Global Outdoor Youth Ambassadors
Los Angeles, Cali. July 18, 2012- GoPro® Hero awards their “get youth in the outdoors” camera’s and grant for the 2nd time to Medicines Global Outdoor Youth Ambassador (MGOYA) programs for its innovative collaboration with local law enforcement providing: National Park climbing, hiking & camping experiences; surfing & aquatic programs with the Torrance South Bay YMCA; field trips to museums, photo exhibits & film festivals.
Johanna Belson, Director of the Medicines Global Outdoor Youth Ambassador programs, announces the “Get kids Moving” GoPro MGOYA Photo Contest. Deputy Executive Director of The Port of Los Angeles, Cynthia Ruiz, has invited the MG Outdoor Youth Ambassadors to take a boat tour of the Port of Los Angeles. On this boat tour, Medicines Global will announce the 2012-2013 MGOYA programs with a GoPro MGOYA Photography Contest, ”The Port of Los Angeles - World Gateway”. The MGOYA participants will have an opportunity to have their photos published in a calendar for the San Pedro/Long Beach CA community. Their photos will be on exhibit at The Port of Los Angeles.
The GoPro camera grant, GoPro fiscal sponsorship and support from the Outdoor Industry & the Natural Food Industry will allow continuing collaboration with the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) San Pedro High School. San Pedro High has a student population of more than 900 students at the newly opened LAUSD campus in San Pedro.

MG Outdoor Youth Ambassadors will encourage, educate & inspire their fellow students to experience wilderness activities and other creative activities. Medicines Global has the support of the principal, magnet coordinator, many teachers and the encouragement of Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa. Programs in place will serve as a model for expanding programs locally & nationally. All programs have a strong creative component focusing on photography.

With funding in place, Medicines Global hopes to embark on their 12th year Anniversary Expedition to Nepal in November. Two MG Outdoor Youth Ambassadors will be selected to join the Expedition. While in Nepal, the students will work with Medicines Global to distribute medical supplies to Kathmandu area hospitals and to health posts along the Annapurna Trail. The students will also learn about the local culture and team up with 2 Nepalese students from Kathmandu who will join the Medicines Global Annapurna trekking & Rx delivery expedition.
Since its inception, MGOYA has provided more than 900 urban youths with outdoor adventures. The 2008-2009 GoPro camera grant helped to continue the program through 2012. The current grant will help facilitate the continuation of MGOYA’s dynamic programs.

The Medicines Global team will be taking appointments at the Outdoor Retailer show seeking sponsorship for its fall 2012 Nepal Expedition as well as support for the continuation of MG’s global networking to adventure travelers and domestic efforts to get kids outdoors and moving.
