The Exxel Outdoors Boulder staff has raised $8,000 in funds for two crucial Boulder-area causes: The Can’d Aid Foundation, with recent work focusing on shipping safe drinking water to the victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, and Big City Mountaineers, which provides transformational camping experiences to at-risk urban youth.

Exxel Outdoors is a leading outdoor recreational gear company, whose Boulder staff regularly volunteer to support environmental and outdoor industry related causes. Often that involves putting sweat-equity into cleaning and weeding local trails. But this time the team chose a different path for giving back.

“We’re always looking for ways to support causes that serve what we all value,” commented Exxel Marketing Director Marily Melis, who lead the effort. “Through a local outdoor gear sample sale, we took the opportunity to raise funds to donate directly to these two remarkable humanitarian organizations.”

Can’d Aid Foundation, the philanthropy of Oskar Blues Brewery, helps communities in a variety of ways. They’ve worked with the Ball Corporation to can, ship and donate over 900,000 cans to date, of clean, safe drinking water to natural disaster relief. More than half of this life-saving water has gone to the victims of the recent, devastating hurricanes in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. In fact, Can’d Aid got post-hurricane access into Puerto Rico when very few organizations could. (Read: bit.ly/Exxel_link_to_CandAid_PuertoRico_Water_Story.)

Exxel’s other donation recipient, Big City Mountaineers (BCM), is a key contributor to the development of the young people of Colorado and beyond. BCM transforms the lives of under-served urban youth through wilderness mentoring expeditions that instill critical life skills. BCM partners with community groups in Colorado, California and the Pacific Northwest. Their curriculum improves self-esteem, responsibility, decision-making abilities and communication skills in close to 1,000 young participants annually. To raise the $8,000 in funds for Can’d Aid Foundation and Big City Mountaineers, Exxel’s staff organized an outdoor gear sale in downtown Boulder, comprised of truckloads of samples of Exxel’s brands - Kelty, Sierra Designs, Ultimate Direction, Slumberjack, Wenzel, Suisse Sport, Insta-Bed and Exxel Kids.
